Addington market Decline in store cattle prices

Store cattle prices dropped as much as $4O a head at the ■Addington market yesterday. The fall was the first big change in store cattle values for several months and it came after a general easing in prime beef prices during the last few weeks. A small gallery of buyers, mostly fanners, followed yesterday’s market and bidding was hesitant. Cattle in a forward condition suffered least from the price adjustment. However, the over-all quality of the yarding was mixed and it included a big proportion of Friesian types. Amongst a small yarding of adult cattle was a pen of Angus-cross steers shipped from the Chatham Islands by Tuanui Brothers. The cattle were in good order and fetched $526. Good 15-month Angus and Hereford-cross steers sold to $452 for J. E. and S. P. Upston, Brookside, and Herefords reached $446 for S. J. Blakely, Culverden. Top 15-month steers generally sold between $420 to $450, mediums were $370 to $4OO, and lighter sorts were $3OO to $350. Good 15-month heifers reached $348 and most were between $290 and $330. Prices of store lambs declined by 50c a head for small lambs, but the value of medium to good lambs remained steady. The bulk of the yarding sold between $ll and $l5. Small lambs were $6 to $9. Only lambs of exceptional quality exceeded $l5 and a line of top Border-Corriedale ewe lambs sold at $17.80. The breeding ewe section contained a bigger selection of sheep than last week and prices for the better condition ewes were satisfactory. One-year ewes in reasonable order fetched $9 to $l2 and lighter sheep’ were slightly cheaper. A well known line of Corriedale four-year ewes from A. S. and B. R. Black, Culverden, sold to $18.30, and their five-year-Olds made $12.50. A special sale of two-tooth ewes will be held at Addington on Friday, February 14.
