Cargo volume rises

Cargo handling at Lyttelton increased 31,436 tonnes last November and December compared with the same period in 1984, the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s trade and commercial development committee was told yesterday.

The marketing manager, Mr Peter Morgan, said in his report that the total amount of cargo handled during the two months was 483,214 tonnes.

Most of the increased tonnage was coal and bulk gypsum. Grain and petroleum products declined in volume. Coastal cargo had shown a marked decline, said Mr Morgan. The shutdown of Marsden Point, while the new refinery was linked up, meant an increase in petroleum imports. This was one reason for the decline.

Another reason was that both the Coastal Trader and Spirit of Competition were tied up and serviced at Lyttelton during the holiday period, said Mr Morgan. Exports accounted for half of the board’s overseas trade for the three months to December 31, slightly less than the previous year. Imports increased 11,844 tonnes during the same period.
