Female car staff complain

PA Wellington Seductive advertising by car rental companies is encouraging customers to reach for more than the keys — and could lead to a strike. Car rental office workers in Dunedin are threatening industrial action and looking for a national campaign if their award talks later this month are not settled.

Although money is a big issue, the workers, predominantly women, are also looking for protection from sexual harassment, the Wellington Clerical Workers Union secretary Ms Liz Tennet has said. “The harassment usually comes not from the boss but from male customers,” Ms Tennet has said.

Television advertising campaigns by car rental companies seemed to encourage some men, she said. The award talks are due to resume on February 25.
