Bowls champion fails to qualify
PA Hamilton The defending fours champion Thelma Kidd (Matamata), failed to qualify for post-section play after losing all four games in the first two days of the women’s dominion bowling tournament in Hamilton. Kidd, who is competing with the same four as last year, lost the vital third game against Jo Gifford (Helmore Park), 12-23 yesterday morning. The four went on to lose its fourth game against June Hill (Northern) 11-23. The 434 teams need to win four of six games to quality. The last qualifying matches Will be played today. A Commonwealth Games team member, Ann Katavich (Point Wells), won two games after being in danger of failing to quality. She lost both her games on the first day, but yesterday won, 23-21 and 21-15. Linwood’s Denise Page, another Commonwealth Games team member will have to win both her games today to quality. Page had a mixed day with a 21-24 loss and scraped in to win 22-19, against Colleen Sutherland (Waitangi) at Morrinsvllle. Three other . Commonwealth Games team members qualified yesterday. Judy Howat (Wellington), Rhoda Ryan (Matamata) and Joyce Osborne (Manawatu) all won the required four games.
Howat narrowly won her first game yesterday, 18-17,
against June Wilkinson (Putaruru) and 21-16 against Pam Raine (Birkenhead). Ryan led her four to 23-15 and 27-15 victories. Qualifiers after today’s play are: N. Callaghan (Tokoroa), R.
