Sale of Merino ewe for $370 a highlight

PA Timaru The sale of a Merino two-tooth ewe for $370 provided the highlight of the second South Island annual Black and Coloured Sheep Breeders’ sale held at the Timaru showgrounds.

Another notable sale was that of a four-year-old ewe for $350, with both animals being offered by Mrs E. C. Anderson, of Albury. A large gallery of buyers from Taihape to Gore attended. Five sheep went to the North Island. The sale of two-tooth rams was disappointing because of an oversupply, except for an outstanding entry from Mrs G. Morrison, Gore, with a registered Romney ram which fetched $4OO.

Ewe lambs ranged from $26, to $76 for a Romney lamb entered by Mrs M. Stewart, of Albury.

For 19 two-tooth ewes sold, prices ranged from $35 to $370, at an average of $7l. Mixed age ewes had an exceptional sale, ranging from $35 to $350 with an average of $BB for the 11 sold.

A four-year-old ram sold on account of Mrs E. Muldrew, Oamaru, realised $l6O. The sale was conducted by the South Canterbury branch of the Black and Coloured Sheep Breeders’ Association in conjunction with the South Canterbury Stock and Station Agents’ Association.
