Flats project postponed

Construction of 10 pensioner flats in Goulding Avenue by the Paparua County Council has been postponed because of lack of money. Each unit was to have cost about $34,000 to build, but the council could only get Housing Corporation subsidies of $28,000 for each flat, said the County Chairman, Mr Jack Pethig, at a council meeting last evening. The Housing Corporation was due to review its subsidy levels. If these

increased the council might be able to reconsider the project. About 50 pensioners were listed wanting council houses, Mr Pethig said. People could wait up to 18 months to get housing, but the waiting time fluctuated considerably. Comet viewing Stargazers in most parts of Paparua County should have a chance for a midnight glimpse of Halley’s Comet between March 3 and April 16.

The council decided to ask the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board to turn off the county’s lights for half an hour from midnight during this period, provided there were no problems with insurance.

Halswell’s lights might not go out because its power is supplied by the Municipal Electricity Department, which has not had a final ruling on turning off lights from the Christchurch City Council.
