O’Rourke retires
PA Auckland Mike O’Rourke will not defend his Commonwealth Games javelin title in Edinburgh this year. O’Rourke announced after Saturday’s Robin Tait Memorial athletic meeting in Auckland that he was retiring from competitive athletics. The Aucklander reached the high point of his career when he won the javelin gold medal with a Commonwealth Games record 89.48 m in Brisbane four years ago. “I’m finished and there’s no chance I’ll be having second thoughts about the decision. “There are lots of reasons for deciding to give it away — nothing specific.” Several weeks ago,
O’Rourke indicated he might not compete at Edinburgh despite the fact he had easily bettered New Zealand’s qualifying standard of 79m In the javelin several times this season. The enthusiasm which you must have to compete at top international level, was no longer there, he said. Despite O’Rourke’s retirement, New Zealand will have two strong medal contenders In the javelin in Edinburgh. Canterbury’s John Stapyl-ton-Smith ranks fourth on the 1985 Commonwealth list with a best throw of 87.28 m, while Hamilton’s talented Gavin Lovegrove, aged 18, is the best junior (under-20) thrower in the world at present.
