Rev. P. H. Blakiston
PA Tauranga The Rev. Peter Henley Blakiston (canon emeritus), who served the diocese of Waiapu for 45 years, has died at his home in Tauranga. He was 74. Mr Blakiston, a descendant of the first Bishop of Christchurch, Bishop' Harper, was born in Dannevirke. He did his theological studies at Canterbury College and was ordained deacon in 1940. He served his curacy at St Matthew’s Anglican Church, Hastings, until 1941 when he was ordained as a priest in Napier Cathedral.
Mr Blakiston served in Hastings until 1943, then was appointed vicar of Te Karaka parish. The next year he was appointed chaplain to the Forces, serving in New Zealand and the Middle East. In 1950 he was ap-
pointed vicar of St Mary’s parish, Waipukurau, and served until 1960 when he became vicar of St Peter’s Church, Mount Maunganui.
He was appointed an honorary canon of the Church in 1965. He retired in 1975.
