Former sect head subject of inquiry
PA Wellington A Wellington detective, Donna Laban, has gone to Sydney with Masterton’s Detective Sergeant Bruce Currie, to make inquiries in relation to charges against the former Greytown sect leader, Andy Narain.
Extradition proceedings against Narain are expected to begin in Sydney’s Waverley Court today. Detective Chief Inspector Mike Charles, of Wellington, said yesterday that Detective Laban would be helping with inquiries and
interviews with some of the Sydney-based former members of the Greytown commune.
Narain is sought by New Zealand police on 21 charges including five involving kidnapping; five involving assaulting a female; six involving cruelty to children; one involving assault on a child; two involving indecent assaults, and two involving assault with intent to injure.
A New Zealander, Narain left for Australia late last year with 21 of his followers.
