Ice attempt abandoned
The Greenpeace Antarctic expedition has abandoned its attempt to land equipment for a base camp at Ross Island and is heading back to New Zealand.
The expedition’s co-or-dinator, Mr Peter Wilkinson, said from the ship yesterday: “Our last aerial survey confirmed that the pack ice round the entrance to McMurdo Sound is not going to shift. “There is a tantalising stretch of clear water about five miles wide from Cape Evans to Cape Royds, but access to that is impossible,” he said. The group had hoped to be able to unload
materials and equipment at Cape Evans in readiness for building a base camp next summer. “We are very disappointed,” said Mr Wilkinson, “But there is no disgrace in giving way to the superiority of Nature. “As our ship’s skipper, Peter Bouquet, said: ‘You pay your dues this year and reap the dividends next year’.’’ The expedition expects to arrive in Wellington on February 12.
