Maori Affairs’ new system

In the first major computer purchase by a government department since the relaxing of their computer buying procedures, the department of Maori Affairs has ordered a Burroughs computer for an ambitious in-house computerisation project. Under the relaxed procedures the department was able to make its own decisions about the purchase, rather than defer to the computer services division of the State Services Commission.

The department of Maori Affairs will install a Burroughs A 3 mainframe with . software developed using LINC. The value of the order is about $1.5 million.

In the first phase of the project 100 terminals will be installed around New Zealand. The project will

be known as MAIA, for Maori Affairs Information Automation project. Maia also is a Maori word, meaning “brave, courageous.”

MAIA will be an allencompassing computer system which will automate all the department’s main financial systems and the Maori Land Court records and processes. This includes capturing the Land Courts historical records.

A significant factor in the decision to choose Burroughs and LINC was the ease of development and ease of use, as the department has limited data processing experience. The project will be a joint venture between the department and Burroughs, and an ambitious implementation plan has been set.
