Default by Mayotte gives title to Lendl

NZPA-AP Philadelphia

Ivan Lendl won the twenty-fifth annual United States Pro Tennis Tournament yesterday his when final-round opponent Tim Mayotte, defaulted because of an injury. Mayotte said he pulled a stomach muscle in the second set on Saturday night during his semi-final victory over Yannick Noah of France., “At this time there is no chance I could be competitive,” Mayotte said at a hastily called news conference about 10 minutes after the match was to have started. “I can serve at about 60 per cent,” said Mayotte, who explained he underwent treatment this morning, and tried to warm up.

“There is no sense walking on the court,”

said the world’s twelfth ranked player. “I’m extremely disappointed, since I’m playing the best tennis of my life.” A doctor told Mayotte that if he played as though in an exhibition match, he probably would not make the injury worse.

“But he said I couldn’t possibly be competitive without making the condition worse. He said it could become a chronic condition. He said I needed seven to 10 days rest with no hitting.” Mayotte could not pick out one shot in the Noah match that caused the injury.

Lendl was declared the tournament champion and took the 5NZ128.250 first prize. Mayotte received $NZ64,125 for second place.
