A lawyer, diplomat, and former guerrilla, Nora Astorga, has been appointed as Nicaragua’s new Ambassador to the United Nations. She became famous during the Sandinist revolution by enticing the Somoza dictatorship’s alleged “torture expert,” General Reynaldo Perez Vega, to her bedroom, where a Sandinist commando lay in wait and killed him. A few weeks later she was at the southern front, gun in hand, battling Antonio Somoza’s army.
Mrs Astorga, who was rejected as Ambassador to the United States by President Ronald Reagan two years ago, will take over the U.N. post from Javier Chamorro.
