Christian meetings

Sir,—M. Davey’s "undreamedof heights” could become a reality of love and laughter if a child’s simple prayer could be answered — “Please God make the bad people good and the good people nice.” — Yours, etc., (Mrs) ROEY WINN. January 31, 1986.

Sir,—M. Davey claims that Christianity is just another religion and Jesus was just another prophet, as was Buddha, Zoroaster, Muhammad and Marx. There is a difference in that none of the above claimed to be, and no-one else claimed that they were the son of God, whereas millions of Christians who knew, and know Jesus, are convinced that he was, and is, the son of God. I am sorry that M. Davey thinks that Christians are not happy people. "Looking happy” is a transient thing, but Christians have within themselves a deep well of peace and joy which will never pass away. — Yours, etc., LORRAINE LAWRIE. January 31, 1986.

Sir, —For M. Davey to say as he does that “Christianity is just another religion, and Jesus was just another prophet (January 31)” is to entirely misinterpret the evidence of history. It is not spiritual insularism that motivates Christians in their claim that the faith is the only true religion: Christ Himself assured us of this fact 20 centuries ago. To read the story of Christ as the story of just a mere man, even of a man totally unheard of before, would lead, if not to immediate belief, at least to a sort of bewildered surprise that would only find a solution in belief. Reductio ad absurduni And the one glaring difference in kind between our faith and that of the Eastern religions is the fact that Christians are only born twice, Buddhists and Hindus many times. At least Christ did not need this sort of celestial “trial and error” in His dealings with humanity. — Yours, etc., ' R. J. CORDING. Rangiora, January 31, 1986. J
