State and local body wages

Sir, — Mr Caygill’s comment that employers, especially local authorities, should be reviewing linking their wage rates to those of Government workers shows a remarkable degree of naivety. The Government itself was unable to limit wage increases and was held to ransom by strike threats from so-called professional groups who control essential services. Does Mr Caygill think local authorities are any more capable of resisting similar threats? Further, why should local body employers accept less than their Public Service counterparts? In this affair the Government is leading the way with huge wage settlements but asking the rest of us to tighten our belts. Perhaps Mr Caygill could address himself to the substance of Sir Hamish Hay’s remarks. If restraint is needed, the Government should have set the example. — Yours, etc., JEANETTE FORBES. January 30, 1986.
