Eliza’s lucky escape
By I
STEPHANIE LEE,
aged 11, of Christchurch. Blackwing was a blackbird. He was five years old and his mate, Eliza, was four. Blackwing was worried. Eliza had gone off to find a worm half an hour ago and she still hadn’t returned. He sat above their nest and waited for her. Then he heard it: the angry hiss of a cat followed by Eliza’s call. Blackwing flew towards the call and found a ginger cat sitting under a bush with Eliza in its mouth. Blackwing knew the cat His name was Dragon but it was really a coward. He swooped down on it, squawking loudly. Dragon dropped Eliza and turned to face him. Eliza flew up to the nearest tree. Blackwing came down like a bomb and pecked the cat on the back. Dragon was annoyed, but by this time Blackwing was perched safely beside Eliza. There was nothing Dragon could do but walk away with a mouth full of feathers.
