Full review of nursing
PA Wellington A full review of nurse preparation and employment in New Zealand will be held later this year, the Health Department has announced. The review chairwoman, Mrs Vivienne Boyd, said the review would examine the relationship between nursing education and employment, including the implications and progress of the changed nursing education system. Mrs Boyd said the review would seek wide participation by public and interested organisations, and would call for submissions. A workshop would be held later in the year, to help guide nursing education and employment. Ten years had elapsed since nursing education had been transferred
from the hospital board three-year programme to tertiary institutions. “As the transfer is nearly complete, and because of wide public interest in nursing education and employment, it is time to look at emerging issues and how to deal with them,” she said. The review committee will include Mrs Boyd, chairwoman of the Consumer Council; Dame Miriam Dell, president of the International Council of Women; Ms Yvonne Shadbolt, department head of nursing at Auckland Technical Institute; Ms Shona Grey, chief nurse, South Canterbury Hospital. Board; Ms Janet Takarangi, principal public health nurse, Palmerston North; and Ms Sally Shaw, director, Division of Nursing, Health Department.
