Sir Michael uncertain whether to continue

Saturday was the last day of Sir Michael Fowler’s official threeyear term as chairman of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council. Sir Michael, who was appointed chairman on February 1, 1983, is uncertain whether he will continue as chairman. “That is a decision for the Minister (of Arts, Mr Tapsell). He will be letting me know soon, I imagine,” he said in Nelson on Saturday. Asked about his availability to continue, Sir Michael said he thought three years was not long enough. .

“Four years seems about right,” he said. His initial appointment was for a three-year term. It had been a busy and enjoyable three years and much had been achieved by the council. Sir Michael said he had been fortunate in having capable council staff to work with “and some of the councillors were not too bad either.” He said he expected to hear from Mr Tapsell about the position soon. “Today (Saturday) is the last day of the three years, but it’s the sort of thing that will probably drift on month, or two anyway."
