Gardens please Beautifying Assn
Christchurch lived up to its reputation of being the garden city when the Christchurch Beautifying Association judged its annual summer garden competition during the week-end. The competition was won by Mr and Mrs N. H. Jones, of 23 Birkenhead Street, Avonhead. Lawns, shrubs, and flowers all reflected the season’s moist conditions said the judges. Shaped shrubs and colour made especially impressive displays. Aspects which disappointed the judges were dead conifers, fungus diseases in lawns which showed as lighter patches, and silver blight on some Prunus species.
