Drinks on duty for police at training course today
PA Wellington A police group will be allowed to bend the rules slightly and drink on duty today, says a Wellington report. But the alcohol will be kava and the drinking will be under supervision. The 26 police from Auckland, Wellington, Levin and Christchurch will take part in the opening ceremony of an intensive Samoan language and cultural course at the police college in Porirua. The co-ordinator of specialist police courses at the college, Chief Inspector John Thurston, said the course — a first for New Zealand police — was a follow-up to a basic course held for Wellington police last year. All officers taking part
in the course are from Samoan backgrounds and will dress in lava lavas for the opening ceremony. The course has been established to provide the police with a better understanding of an ethnic minority, and communication skills to deal with Samoan people. Special guests at the ceremony include the Western Samoa High Commissioner, Lupematasila Aumua loane, and the director of the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, Mr Tony Johns. Senior police officials and Samoan community leaders also will attend. Mr Thurston said there was likely to be scope for non-Samoan police to take shorter courses. Future
courses would be held at a district level.
The shorter courses would probably be similar to the Maori courses run by the Polytechnic Institute.
The Samoan course at the college will be tutored by the private secretary to the Western Samoa Prime Minister, Tuilefuffuga Papalii E Hunkin. Others helping will include the chief translator for the Department of Internal Affairs, Mr Bill Aldridge, and his partner, Mr Patrick King.
Two observers will attend the course, one from the police college’s behavioural science section and one from the Justice Department.
