Defence challenge to Govt
PA Wellington The Leader of the Opposition, Mr McLay, yesterday called on the Government to admit that its senior defence advisers had said the assistance of allies in defending New Zealand could no longer be guaranteed. Mr McLay said that the Government’s policy against port visits by nuclear ships meant it was not possible for New Zealand to take for granted its long-term strategic security.
The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, should admit he had been receiving frank advice that by banning the ships of allies New Zealand was making it impossible for allies to defend the nation, said Mr McLay. t
