Haden to give sea legs a try?

PA Auckland Andy Haden, the All Black lock and Auckland captain, says he is considering joining the crew of Lion New Zealand for the last two legs of the Whitbread round-the-world yacht race. The race finishes in May, and the Auckland rugby team has commitments' in the Tasman tournament in April. “I have permission to go on Lion,” said Haden as he mingled with Lion the crew at a reception at the week-end.

“I guess it would be a gracious way of saying my playing days are over.”

Lion New Zealand’s skipper, Peter Blake said: “I think this is something humorous between Andy

and the crew, but if Andy is serious, he is most welcome to come along. I would be very happy to have him.” Simon Gundry, who sailed with Blake in Ceramco New Zealand in the last race, has recently become a father for the second time and has decided reluctantly not to continue the race. Blake said last week his crew would not enlist a replacement. The watch captain, Grant Dalton and the crew are willing, however, to make an exception in Haden’s case. “Andy has always played a team sport,” said Dalton. "You could not find a better team man. We would be happy to have him along.”
