G.D.P. figure falls 0.3%

PA Wellington Gross domestic products fell 0.3 per cent, in the 1985 June-September quarter from the previous quarter, according to the Statistics Department. In the year to the end of September, however, G.D.P. grew 3.2 per cent. The figure for the September quarter was 0.9 per cent higher than for the corresponding quarter the previous year.

The construction and electricity, gas and water sectors G.D.P. figures both rose 3.9 per cent during the quarter; agriculture fell 1.5 per cent. Agriculture sector G.D.P. was 3.8 per cent lower than in the corresponding period in 1984 but grew 2.1 per cent in the 12 months to the end of September. The manufacturing sector rose 3.9 per cent in the September year. The figure for fishing, hunting, forestry and mining was 17 per cent higher in the 12-month period but 7.9 per cent down on the corresponding quarter in 1984. The Opposition finance spokesman, Mr Bill Birch, said the figures confirmed that the Government had all but destroyed the momentum of economic growth apparent at the time of the 1984 General Election.
