Otago sent reeling
PA Hamilton The decision of the Northern Districts’ captain, Geoff Howarth, to ask Otago to bat, paid off handsomely when its Shell Trophy cricket match started at Hamilton yesterday. On a day drastically affected by rain, the competition leader lost six wickets for 57 runs in the face of Northern Districts’ three-pronged mediumpace attack of Mark Carrington, Karl Treiber and Steve Scott. Wet surrounds after overnight rain prevented any play until 2.15 p.m.
and there were several interruptions through showers until more sustained rain set in shortly after 4.30 p.m. An hour-and-a-half later, play was abandoned for the day. On a slow pitch, Carrington, Treiber and Scott performed well and enjoyed good support from catchers close to and behind the wicket.
The Otago batsmen, of whom Ron Hoskin got farthest with 19 in just under an hour, seemed uncertain of the pace of the pitch, and were not able to achieve innings of stability.
