Central in control

PA New Plymouth Central Districts took the honours on the rainshortened first day of its Shell Trophy cricket match against Auckland at New Plymouth yesterday. Central finished 13 without loss after dismissing Auckland for 228 on a wicket that was generally true, although slightly slow early on. The Aucklanders, after the captain Peter Webb had elected to bat after winning the toss, had only themselves to blame for not posting a bigger score. Apart from the opener, Trevor Franklin, who made 69 before falling to Gary Robertson, the Auckland batsmen too often lost their wickets after good starts. Franklin was in superb touch and his 69 came up off 112 balls and included 12 fours. He put on 52 with Richard Reid in 49 minutes for the fourth wicket. The other opener, Derek Scott, and the danger man, Dipak Patel, both looked good making 13 and 22 respectively but both succumbed to the hook. Reid, Webb, Alan Hunt and Paul Kelly all got among the runs but were out to either loose shots or lapses in concentration. Hunt, although edging a couple through slips early on, hit five boundaries in his innings of 23 off 34 balls. He looked to force the pace before being bowled by Peter Visser with a ball that cut back. AUCKLAND First innings T. Franklin b Robertson 69 D. Scott c Visser b Robertson 13 M. Greatbatch c S.
