Smooth Falcon for Inter-Doms

NZPA-AAP Melbourne The driver, Vin Knight, paid Smooth Falcon the ultimate compliment after the New Zealand-bred pacer scored a brilliant win in the Victoria Derby at Moonee Valley on Saturday night. “Smooth Falcon has the same magic as Popular Alm,” Knight said. “He’s just a super horse.” Knight and his father, the trainer, Bob Knight, now intended to give Smooth Falcon the chance to win the Inter-Dominion Championship — the only achievement which eluded Popular Alm in his illustrious career. Smooth Falcon will be nominated tomorrow for the $320,000 InterDominion series, which starts in April, in Brisbane.

No other three-year-old has contested the InterDominion in its 45-year history.

“The Inter-Dominion is made for three-year-olds this year,” Knight said.

“The two mile heats and the short final (over 2100 m) will suit him

ideally.” Smooth Falcon on Saturday registered his eighth win from nine starts since Bob Knight purchased him from New Zealand last year. Knight outlayed an undisclosed six figure sum for the colt on behalf of the Australasian Bloodstock and Racing Company. But Smooth Falcon has nearly repaid his purchase price, earning $92,000 with the prospect of much more to come. Smooth Falcon, a 2-7 favourite, led almost throughout to win by two metres from another New Zealand-bred horse, Sir Vance (20-1).

The Bendigo-trained pacer, Gold Share (12-1), was three metres away, third.

An indication of Smooth Falcon’s superiority can be gauged from the fact that he equalled his own class record of 1:59.9 for the 2380 m journey.

Smooth Falcon unwound a blistering 56.7 s in the last 800 m which left his rivals an impossible task.
