Bullet Proof fancied at Wairoa today

Special correspondent Wairoa The chances are that Bullet Proof and Hassendean will be successful newcomers on the second day of the Wairoa Racing Club’s meeting today. Bullet Proof which is in the De Luxe Ford Handicap today, has not raced since scoring in highweight class on the second day of the Wellington Cup meeting. Though Hassendean failed in the Wrightson Sprint at the same fixture, it will be a different matter in today’s second leg, the Carter Holt Handicap.

Bullet Proof is now seven but he has been sparingly raced, and altogether has now won five times from fewer than 30 starts. He is by the colonial-bred, Bardall, and is trained at Bulls by Merv Andrews. Before winning at Trentham Bullet Proof had scored at the Hawke’s Bay New Year meeting. Run for Cover, the beaten favourite on the first day, continues to race consistently and a winning turn cannot be far away. But he may be pressed with 57kgs to keep Bullet Proof at bay.

Noble Khan followed his Woodville win with a solid run for second on the first day while Flight to Reno is another worth some consideration. Hassendean has been a wonderful sprinter on the provincial circuit and with a full allowance seems certain to be hard to beat in the second leg. The first-day winner, Pell Mell, will, if anything, be more suited to the 1485 m of the Carter Holt Handicap and Chuckka Khan is another whose chances must be respected in spite of his first-day failure.
