Sydenham shows better form

Riccarton and Sydenham are strongly placed after thefirst day of two-day games in the women’s cricket competition.

Sydenham, with a much improved display, has already taken first-innings points from the more-fav-oured Lancaster Park; side. Lancaster Park, batting first, was strengthened by the inclusion of the Central Districts player, Penny Kinsella, but it really struggled against the tight medium-pace deliveries of Sue Brown. Debbie Ford was the only Park batsmen to handle Brown with any assurance. Ford’s 75 not out was a superb effort which gave the Park scoreboard some respectability and took her personal tally for the season close to 500 runs. Brown finished with the impressive figures of six for 44 off 35 overs. In reply a good team effort from Sydenham took it to 124 for two after 54 overs. Mary Marshall and Toni Watts gave the team a sound start Vivienne Cowles and Maria Lewis were able to continue, taking Sydenham to a first-innings lead. Riccarton also looks set to take first-innings points. Batting first, Riccarton reached the relatively modest score of 137 for seven off 70 overs. Lesley Murdoch was the mainstay of the Riccarton batting, accumulating 62 in a patient innings. She received good support from Sheree Harris (28). The St Albans bowlers were parsimonious in their concession of runs, particularly Brigit Legg,; who took two for 12 off, 13 overs. With ten runs to play with Riccarton heeded a very tight bowling effort and here they were admirably served by Karen Gunn and Delwyn Costello. Bowling unchanged. these two pinned the St Albans batsmen down, allowing only 65 runs from 55 overs. Gunn took five for 24 off 27 overs with her accurate medium pacers. With just 15 overs left the target of 138 runs for firstinnings looks a remote prospect for St Albans. LANCASTER PARK v. SYDENHAM LANCASTER PARK First Innings N. J. Turner cLewis b Brown.
