Heathcote downed by Southern Districts
The eighth round in the senior suburban cricket competition concluded on Saturday with all two-day teams playing a 40-over match. Southern Districts, Vistalite Sumner, Hoon Hay and Woolston WMC all gained victories. The competition leader, Heathcote, unexpectedly went down to a determined Southern Districts side at Beckenham Park. The home team won the toss and sent Heathcote in to bat. Kit Chambers took the only three wickets. Woolston WMC moved another step closer to the leaders when it narrowly escaped defeat over the bottom placed Christchurch WMC at On a good batting strip,/'g Christchurch won the toss and elected to bat. A gallant effort, with Robbie Withers leading the way enabled Christchurch to reach 154 for nine. Good tight bowling from Carl Slave, Ron Aldous and the spinner, Mark White, restricted Heathcote’s total to 112. Southern Districts, in reply, appeared in trouble at 19 for the loss of three wickets, but Sean Weir and Dave McConnell carried their team to a notable victory by seven wickets with a 94-run partnership. Weir and McConnell were both not out on 30 and 58 respectively. Graeme Barrett batted well for 54. The match was won with seven balls in hand and four wiplrAtc in Wnnlclnn’s favnnr.
At Upper Riccarton, Vistalite Sumner was sent in to bat after Upper Riccarton won the toss and scored a good target of 186 for nine from the maximum 40 overs. This was out of Riccarton’s reach as it could only manage 150 with one wicket in hand. Alan Kerr led the batting for Riccarton with an opening innings of 52 before being bowled by Don Braid.
Braid took three wickets to give him an individual achievement of taking 50 wickets in club matches this season. The final match was between Bowleys Hornby and Hoon Hay at Hoon Hay Park. Boon Hay scored 87, with Bruce Day making more than half, the total with 45. Bruce Purdon bowled well to pick up four wickets for only three runs. Hornby could only manage 65, restricted by good tight bowling from Jim Bennie, Tony Pugh and W. Rean.
There were no centuries scored arid only one hat trick. B. Hines, of Harewood Second Grade, took three wickets for twelve runs, including a hat trick, against Southern Districts.
