Dr Shearer to halt probe if employed
PA Auckland The former National Cabinet Minister, Dr lan Shearer, says he will not continue his public inquiry into alleged financial irregularities within the party if he is appointed director-general of the Conservation Department Dr Shearer is a candidate for the $87,500 job to be created this year. “If I am appointed to the job I will continue to try and get answers to these financial questions, but it will not be done in public,” he said yesterday. Dr Shearer said he believed he had strong claims to the directorgeneralship of the new department, having served nine years as a
member of Parliament in the Muldoon Government, and worked for nine years as an., -agricultural research scientist at Ruakura. • The department will incorporate sections of the Lands and Survey Department, the Fdrest Service, the Wildlife Service, and the Historic Places Trust Dr Shearer is at present a technical consultant for an Auckland firm of chartered accountants, Arthur Young. Dr Shearer said also on Saturday that he would forward his name for the National Party presidency. ; He , believed Mrs Wood would either resign this year or not-seek re-elec-tion.
