Govt approval for isocyanates code

PA Wellington A code of practice for using the organic chemicals, isocyanates, has received Government ap-

proval. Isocyanates are used to make polyurethane products such as foam, paints, varnishes, lacquers and urethane products such as rubbers, adhesives and binders. An isocyanates code was issued by the Chief Inspector of Factories in 1979 and revised in 1984. The approval gives legal recognition to standards

in the code as a means of complying with relevant sections of the Factories and Commercial Premises Act

Isocyanate vapour or dust can cause asthmalike breathing difficulties, headaches, dry throats, tightness of the chest, dermatitis, watering eyes and permanent eye damage. The code sets minimum safety and health standards. It deals with ventilation, removal of hazardous fumes, protective clothing, safe storage methods and training and

supervision of workers. All users of isocyanates have been urged to obtain a copy of the code, available free from Labour Department offices.
