Board revokes Coastal Trader master’s licence
PA - . ; Dunedin The Otago Harbour Board has revoked the local licence of a master of the Coastal Trader, after 'an*' f incident on Christmas Eve, when the ship ran aground near Port Chalmers. This means that when the Coastal Trader is under that master’s command he must use a pilot to bring the ship into port. Previously he had pilotage exemption.
The board will not release the name of the
master, but the “Otago Daily Times” newspaper says it believes he has been on New Zealand Shipping Corporation’s ships for many years, and has frequently brought ships in and out : of Otago Harbour. : - t He can re-sit examination for a local licence in 12 months, the board says. The main cause of the grounding has not been found, and the Ministry of Transport is now running its own inquiry. The Coastal Trader ran
agound off Deborah Bay at 6.50 a.m. on December 24. It took two harbour board tugs just over six hours to move- the 6736tonne ship. The vessel had touched the bbtton ip the .* harbour before; but that • grounding resulted froin mechanical breakdown. If the Coastal Trader is brought into port by another master, she will hot need pilotage. ’The corporation revolves its-mas-ters’ - commands. The Coastal Trader is a weekly visitor to Dunedin.
