Test of skills for apprentices
Skill and concentration make a powerful team, as Stephen Chernishoff (above), of the Municipal Electricity Department, found out yesterday when he was runner-up in a competition to find the Christchurch district’s electrical apprentice of the year. The winner was Russell Hands, of the Electricity Division, who will represent the district at
the National Skilympics competition for electrical apprentices at Mystery Creek, Hamilton, in March. The local contest was
organised by Mr Bernard Crawley, of the electrotechnology department at Christchurch Polytechnic. The five contestants
were set five tasks, with limited time so their ability to work under pressure could be assessed. The other three apprentices competing were Mark Burrowes, of Canterbury Frozen Meat, Murray Lemon, of Nairn Electrical of Leeston, and Dean Carter, of the Ashburton Electric Power Board.
