Shipping news Fish processing experiment

Experimental processing of New Zealand fish into “surimi” will begin in May. Surimi is minced fresh fish, set in blocks and frozen for processing into seafood delicacies. A developmental allocation of 20,000 tonnes of hoki for processing into surimi has been granted to the AmaltalTaiyo fishing company by the Minister of Fisheries, Mr Moyle. A purpose-built trawler, the 3000-tonne Zuiyo Maru 3, will work in New Zealand’s economic zone west and south of the South Island from May to September. If the experiment is successf’’l, the company wants to buiU a processing plant in Nelson next year. The Zuiyo Mani 3 is a small factory ship with seven surimi production lines .which can process up to 300 tonnes of fish a day.

The total allowable catch of hoki in New Zealand’s economic zone is 60,000 tonnes, although the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries estimates that the sustainable catch could be as high as 300,000 tonnes. Amaltal-Taiyo is a joint New Zealand-Japanese company, owned 75 per cent by Amalgamated Marketing and Talleys Fisheries, and 25 per cent by the Taiyo Fishery Company of Japan. ARRIVALS
