Cleaning job starts again
Gavin Haynes (right) aged 16, spent his birthday yesterday helping his father clean up the mess after an arson attack at the Aldersgate Centre in Durham Street The fire was restricted to the cafeteria, but smoke and water damage was widespread. The police beiieve the centre was broken into sometime after midnight and that the fire had been smouldering *for several hours when it was discovered by Mr Peter
Haynes and Gavin at 6.30 B.m. yesterday, as ,they , arrived,for work. ;< “Even before I opened the door I couldn't see through the windows and we smelt smoke,”. said Mr Haynes. r i He. fought his- : way through thick black ;smoke to check ihe. pottery kiln, and then telephoned the Fire Service. , Mr Haynes and Gavin had recently finished cleaning the centre, but
the task started again yesterday. The fire also killed a pet canary. The cafeteria, which is used regularly by elderly people, will not be open for a month. The centre is also used for community groups and workshops. It is hoped community groups will be able to use other ’ buildings on the premises. The workshops are expected to start on Friday.
