Outright defeat for Canty
PA Auckland Dipak Patel yesterday tore the heart out of the Canterbury innings, taking three wickets in seven balls after lunch in the Shell Trophy match at Eden Park. Earlier in the season against the Cantabrians the Worcestershire professional, aged 28, scored 174 and took eight wickets.
Patel yesterday captured five wickets for 41, having taken four for 47 in the first innings. He found sharp turn with his off spinners, and his change of pace and enticingly flighted deliveries proved too much for Canterbury, who were dismissed for 134, giving Auckland an outright win by 196 runs.
Patel’s effort helped to vindicate the decision of the Auckland captain, Peter Webb, not to enforce the follow-on. • At Oamaru, Richard Hoskin played the innings of his life as Otago sped to a thrilling four-wicket win over Central Districts. Otago scored the 342 runs needed for victory in just 237 minutes and 69.1
overs as its batsmen launched a blistering but calculated assault on the Central bowling.
The real heroes of the Otago run chase yesterday were the openers, Ken Rutherford and Stu McCullum, and the Southlanders, Hoskin and John Lindsay,
