New agriculture head likes N.Z.

NZPA staff correspondent Washington President Reagan has announced his intention to nominate his long-time friend and administrator, Richard Lyng, as the next Agriculture Secretary. Mr Lyng, aged 67, will succeed John Block, who resigned earlier this month. Since January last year, Mr Lyng has been an agricultural consultant In Washington. Before that, from 1981 until the end of 1984, he was Deputy Secretary of Agriculture under Mr Block. Mr Lyng served as California's Director of Agriculture from 1967 to 1969

while Mr Reagan was Governor there. The appointment of Mr Lyng will, be welcomed by New Zealand trade officials In Washington, as they had good relations with him when he was Deputy Secretary of Agriculture. He was known to be well disposed towards New Zealand.
