AUSTRALIA Industrials set record
NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets reached a record close in mixed trading with gains by a bullish industrial sector being offset by a falling BHP, brokers said. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had risen 0.9 points to a record 1075.1. The all industrials gained 9.6 points to a record 1601.7 but the all resources index lost 5.2 points to 669.5. The gold index dropped 4.1 points to 997.4. Turnover was 86.6 million shares worth 5238.4 M, with rises outnumbering falls by 279 to 206. BHP provided more than
half of the market’s turnover with 14.6 million shares traded in a carry over from Thursday's option exercises. The stock lost 20c to 888 c, reaching a high of 900 c and a low of 886 c. Among other market leaders CSR gained 4c to 370 c and Bell Resources remained steady on 640 c. In a relatively quiet mining sector CRA lost 2c to 570 c. Western Mining dropped 3c to 364 c, and MIM gained 1c to 303 c in strong trading. About 600,000 shares in North Broken Hill were traded and the stock remained steady on 280 c.
