Hamiora Tu, a painting by Gottfried Lindauer, now in the Auckland City Art Gallery. The illustration comes from “Gottfried Lindauer: His Life and Maori Art” reviewed today. Hamiora Tu was a chief of the Ngaiterangi from the Tauranga district. He fought for the Government against the Kingite movement and received large reserves of land within the confiscated district as payment for his services. The main interest of this portrait is said to lie in Lindauer’s record of the thigh moko.
