Australia BHP tops record, trading

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets surged to a record close with strong gains by BHP and industrial stocks as well as favourable domestic news pushing the market up, brokers said. At the close of trading the all-ordinaries index had risen 13.7 points to a record of 1074.2, the all-industrials index 16.4 points to a record close of 1592.3 after reaching a high of 1594.0, and the allresources index 11.3 points to 674.7. The gold index jumped 10.2 points to 1001.1. Turnover was 70.3 M shares worth S27OM, with rises outnumbering falls by 270 to 154. Brokers said the release of better-than-expected CPI figures for the December quarter combined with predictions of easing interest rates boosted the industrial index. BHP provided about twothirds of the market’s turnover, with 19M shares traded, nearly IM of them in overseas sales. The stock closed 32c up at 908. Among other market leaders, CSR gained 2c to 366 and Bell Resources remained steady on 640. In a relatively quiet mining sector, CRA closed 2c up at 572, North Broken Hill gained the same to 280, a gold miner, GMK, put on 40c to 960 and Central Norseman improved 20c to 760. Oil and gas stocks traded slightly firmer, with Santos adding 4c to 536 and Bridge Oil 6c to 208. In a strong industrial sector, News Corp led the way, jumping 80c to 1060 after reaching a high of 1110 as the market perceived that Rupert Murdoch was winning his British newspaper battle with printers’ unions. Elsewhere, Howard Smith jumped 30c to 520, the Bell Group 24c to 744, Adsteam 20c to 1190, James Hardie 7c to 355 and TNT 3c to 298. Major banking stocks closed firmer, with the National Australia bank up 7c to 482, Westpac 6c to 352 and the ANZ 3c to 456.
