People still wanted daily diet of fantasy
NZPA Washington Challenger may have exploded, killing seven astronauts, an event that gripped the world, but for some Americans “the soaps must go on.” In Salt Lake City two television stations were swamped with calls from viewers complaining that
the afternoon soap operas had been replaced by continuous coverage of the shuttle disaster.
“This is crazy. During ‘General Hospital’ hour I was swamped with calls,” said one station’s receptionist, Nelda Garcia.
“It makes you wonder about society, you know. How could they care so much about a soap opera? People said they were tired of watching space shuttle coverage all day — they wanted their entertainment.”
Another receptionist, Renee Gordon, said that
she had explained the soaps were not on because of the tragedy. But people would reply, “Yes, its a tragedy all right. I can’t watch ‘As The World Turns’,” she said.
“You can’t help but feel a little angry when you hear this.”
