Govt rejection supported

Canterbury manufacturers support the Government’s rejection of farmers’ calls for an immediate removal of import licensing and a further reduction of tariffs.

Commenting on a speech the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Caygill, gave the Canterbury United Council, the president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, Mr Bill Broadhead, said that manufacturers were impressed with Mr Caygill’s rejection of farmers’ calls to free up importing.

Mr Caygill countered the farmers’ demands with the results of independent research studies.

Mr Broadhead said he hoped that Federated Farmers would accept that the freeing up of imports was against their own interests and could be to their detriment.

“Now that this protection argument has been independently settled, once and for all, we can look forward to greater co-operation between farmers and manufacturers,” said Mr Broadhead.
