Farm crisis blamed

PA Whangarei The deepening crisis in farming was forcing an increasing number of Northland rural families to break up, said the president of Bay of Islands Federated Farmers, Mr John Coleman. Three out of 10 cases of violent family breakdown known to him in the Kaikohe area came from farming families, he said at a meeting in Kaikohe. Because a farmer had his name on a land title, the Social Welfare Department thought he was wealthy, Mr Coleman said. Families had been refused Family Care by the department when they had no money for food. A special extension to a maximum of $lOOO that had been promised by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, had not come through, he said.
