Mexico buys U.S. dry milk surplus

NZPA staff correspondent Washington

The United States yesterday announced the sale of 10,000 tonnes of non-fat dry milk to Mexico. The dry milk, valued at SUS 7.3 million ($13.87 million), was part of United States surplus stocks, said the Secretary of Agriculture, Mr John Block.

New Zealand, like the United States, has been developing markets for non-fat dry milk in Mexico. Mr Block said the United States sale by the Commodity Credit Corporation was at SUS73O ($1387) a tonne delivered at Mexican border points. Deliveries will begin in February. Credit arrangements were not part of the sale, he said. The corporation has made sales of non-fat dry

milk to the Mexican Government’s food buying agency, Conasupo, since 1968.

Mexico would give the corporation the opportunity to participate in a tender for additional purchases of non-fat dry milk in the near future, Mr Block said.

On January 10 the corporation had 419,350 tons of uncommitted non-fat dry milk in stock, he said.
