‘Sweaty jerseys’ stolen

PA Auckland Ten “old, sweaty football jerseys” have been stolen from the Auckland University Rugby Club’s rooms—but their assorted colours are irreplaceable. They were international jerseys bartered for, or worn by, a former All Black, Grahame Thorne.

Their glass display cases were smashed by thieves who broke in through a glass door and created “needless mayhem,” said the club captain, Chris Seagar.

Glass from windows, cabinets, a colour television and club photographs was spread round the club house, a cash register broken and part of a sound system taken. The jerseys were those of England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, . France, South Africa, Japan, Australia and the British Lions. Thorne said it was unbelievable that someone would go to so much bother for “old, sweaty football jerseys.” “What are they going to do with them? Wear them in the garden?” he asked. Thorne said his mother had collected the jerseys “Pd bring them home and throw them to her and she would fold them into a big plastic bag and put them under the bed or something,” he said. When the University clubhouse was built, the jerseys were donated for the walls.

They represented Thorne’s All Black career of four years and 10 test matches.

It was possible the jerseys could be replaced, from overseas, but they would not be the same.
