China seeks thrift
NZPA-AFP Peking Peking has banned work units from giving dinners and distributing gifts to celebrate the lunar new year on February 9, said the “People’s Daily.” Foreign guests should be offered a cup of tea, and not the customary candies, fruit and pastry, advised the Government circular. It criticised “extravagance and waste.” All New Year’s receptions must be authorised and officials would be
barred from accepting gifts from their subordinates or profiting, from connections by purchasing gifts at reduced prices, the circular said. The lunar new year has been the. occasion for costly official and family celebrations, and for people to buy consumer goods. China is pursuing a policy of restraint after a record foreign trade deficit of almost SUSI 4 billion (5NZ26.6 billion.)
