Sir,—When I was travelling to the city from Lyttelton in a Transport Board bus crowded with Russian seamen, and standing room only, one got up and gave me his seat. Another steadied my arm when I was alighting. They do not give up seats to young women, only to whitehaired grandmothers (babushkas). Also, Mr J. Simcock, the Commissioner of Inland Revenue, says “please pay” on his communications. —Yours, etc. R. W. J. McLEAN. January 28, 1986.
