Dali in Russia

Sir, —A recent article about aniexhibition to be shown in the U.&5.R. of the works of Salvador Dali, the surrealist painter, was

of much interest. It would not have eluded the Russian authorities that Dali was very clear about his sympathies for the fascists during the Spanish Civil War and that he even proposed a bizarre commemorative monument to them, which was to be made by melting down into a single mass the bones of all those who had died. That the Soviet State is able to sponsor and support such a political extreme from its own economic and social system testifies to its moral and intellectual superiority over the corrupt and degenerating political philosophy of capitalism. Instead of inciting provocation around the globe, the United States, if it had a genuine desire for peace, should be following the Soviet example of peaceful co-operation and coming to terms with its Ideological enemy—Marxism.—Yours, etc.,

P. J. ANKERS. January 28, 1986.
