Cable-car proposal
Sir,—As a prospective Heathcote Valley resident, I attended the meeting held by the developers of the Mount Cavendish gondola, ski slope, and toboggan run (aptly named the “Scream Machine” by Auckland residents). Residents’ questions were discussed, but non-residents’ questions were considered irrelevant. Increased traffic, pollution and noise from 9 a.m. till midnight daily, will irrevocably change Heathcote Valley. But this development concerns people other than Heathcote Valley residents. Lyttelton’s domestic life will be watched by 250,000 pairs of eyes annually, Lyttelton becoming the amphitheatre for the gondola restaurant. Change on the Summit Road concerns all Canterbury residents. Parliament passed the 1963 act to protect and preserve the scenic quality of the road and associated environment. A commercial venture masquerading as a tourist project will breach the object of this act. Planning approval will create a precedent for further infringement. — Yours, etc., B. A. WOODALL.
