Harbour race for Whitbread maxis
PA Auckland The Whitbread maxi yachts will stage a harbour race series here before leaving on the third leg of their world race — if Mr Andy Haden can sign up the sponsors. With six of the world’s 12 racing maximum rating boats in the city together for the Whitbread stopover, the ÜBS Switzerland skipper, Pierre Fehlmann, believed it would be a grand opportunity to stage an inner harbour round-the-buoys series.
Before leaving for Switzerland he asked the Sporting Contacts managing director, Mr Haden, to set up the event. Haden has everything arranged but is awaiting
confirmation from a sponsor.
“Until this sponsor is secured, we cannot confirm that the race will go ahead,” Mr Haden said. As well as the naming rights buyer it is proposed that each of the six maxis will have its own sponsor. The individual skippers want $20,000 apiece. Mr Haden said that most of these were confirmed.
The proposed two-race series would be a first for New Zealand. It is the first time there has been more than one maxi in New Zealand and interest is running high in Auckland. “I’ve had calls from two large city hotels facing the waterfront who want to hold race day lunch-
eons. And boat charter firms are waiting for confirmation, too,” Mr Haden said.
A meeting of the maxi yacht skippers and crews yesterday signified that everyone supported the venture.
Mr Haden was hoping for confirmation by the end of the week.
The Whitbread round-the-world race committee had agreed to stage the event with assistance from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, which would conduct the racing, Mr Haden said.
Course details were completed and a proposed date — February 6 (Waitangi Day), has been set aside for the racing.
